Trained at Chelsea College of Art, Katherine Sheers spent her early career working as a lingerie designer. The body, in particular the female body, was a necessary preoccupation during that time. Now, as an artist, it is the body which continues to hold her gaze. Sheers’s practice is deeply rooted in physicality; regarding it as a gateway into an intimate view of our existence. Unconcerned with rendering flesh itself, her interest lies in depicting the absent body; corporeal echos which trace the displacement of the body from ordinary life, whether through trauma or transcendence.
Being present to the body in its most revealed and vulnerable state, the discipline of life drawing underpins her abstract work. Using figurative sketches as a reference point from which to anchor her awareness of the body, Sheers then employs sensorial stimulation to foster a degree of physical empathy and response within her own body. From this marriage of anatomical observation and somatic experience, a choreographed movement of marks form, articulating a visual language of human interaction and connection.
